Blue racers live in a variety of habitats, such as open woods, meadows, abandoned farmlands, raspberry thickets, and the edges of lakes and marshes.

They are alert and active snakes that gracefully glide away when approached, often climbing into low shrubs or trees to escape.

Racers eat rodents, frogs, other snakes, birds, and insects.

Females lay from 6 to 32 eggs in rotted wood, humus or moist sand during June or July.
